The Car as Art

Circulating around the Blue Dome Arts Festival this weekend (it’s that thing next to Mayfest where you see artists from Tulsa) we got to see a lot of old friends and meet some interesting and creative people.

When we wandered down to Living Arts it was time to stroll through the vehicles on display for the Art Car Weekend. It reminded me of a meeting several years ago. Steve Liggett and a fledgeling group of organizers wanted to produce an event inspired by the massive Houston Art Car event. The Art of This Land

The Art of This Land..was an exhibit at Black Optical on Brookside which featured artwork and photography from the newspaper This Land Press. The one-night exhibit was held April 26th.

Images of local celebrities as diverse as Leon Russell, Woody Guthrie and Mary Beth Babcock graced the walls of the narrow retail space. It was quite a shindig and attendance was impressive. The eclectic crowd was enjoying the evening and I only wished the display would have been left up for a few days so others could enjoy it.

Find: Space Needle Hand Towel

I had the Space Needle on my mind last night after perusing the souvenir edition of the Seattle Times from April 1962. I dropped in on eBay to see what sort of Seattle memorabilia might be available.  Turns out ephemera from the worldly fairs actually has a category on eBay. Who knew!

Check it out- a 50 year old towel.

But not just any towel- it’s a souvenir from the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle! Very cool graphic featuring the space needle and the monorail.

This year happens to be the 50th anniversary of the “Century 21 Exposition.” Check out this classic space-age towel here…
